Prologue
The Can Chasers
It all started when four top notch barrel racers came up with the idea to run the rodeo circuits as a team. The goal was to save money and decrease the work load….while having fun.
So, ten years ago the four women came together and took the rodeo trail like a whirlwind.
These gals grew up together in New Mexico, more like sisters than friends… argue and fight like sisters, but if you mess with one, you have to deal with all. You wouldn’t like the end result.
They were right… it’s worked out near to perfect.
The Team Members:
Jessie Ryan
Beverly Blackbird
Suzanne Johnson
Emily Bollard
Jessie’s the real deal cowgirl who’s the glue of the group. She can do everything from haul the biggest rig across country, to push cans, to train top barrel and roping horses. She’s a beautiful, hot tempered Irish gal. She works like a fool and she’s not fond of the bull crap men put out.
She can be mean as hell if the occasion calls for it. She once shot the ear off a cowboy in a Texas roadhouse then finished her two-step dance! She denies it being a true story — but there was witnesses to it.
She’s a hard ass so just don’t fuck with Jessie.
There’s Beverly Blackbird — Jicarilla Apache. She looks like what she is, a beautiful woman, full blood reservation Indian with silky, long black hair and golden brown skin. She trust only a few people, stays to herself, and does all she can to become the best person she can be.
Jessie and Blackbird have always been close. They never speak English when together and that always pisses off a lot of people. Guess what, they don’t care and have shared hundreds of rodeos, sweat lodges and Sun Dances together since they were kids. Jessie is considered a daughter by the Blackbird family tribe having spent much time on the reservation with them.
Blackbird would rather eat nails than talk politics or be around people who play cruel heart games. She searches for her love within her tribe.
There’s Suzanne Johnson, the long-legged sexy blond who loves the big city and those slick mafia type men. She’s sarcastic and doesn’t understand the word ‘No’. Why is she still on the team? Because she grew up with us, she’s our sister. We can’t cast her aside only because she thinks different. But we do keep an eye on her.
Besides, she’s the one who taught us how to wear makeup and flirt with a sizzling, grumpy cowboy from a distance. Jessie is Suzanne’s anchor.
Emily Bollard is the sweetest one of the team and works hard to keep the peace and keep everyone out of trouble. She’s a great cook and a gorgeous, curvy brunette who has a voice like a songbird. Jessie and Emily share a deep love for music spending many a night playing guitar and singing after supper. Everyone loves Em, as they should.
Chapter 1
Jessie Ryan
The very last thing a can chaser wants is a lot of rain…
It’s a tight turn to get my horse trailer onto this narrow dirt road into the rodeo grounds since my rig is big handling 6 horses and living quarters. As we pass the arena, I slow down to see its ankle deep in mud. Mud makes a hell of a lot more work.
"Well, after a nine hour drive in relentless rain, we find this mess. We’re not driving back out to dinner, Emily. Better call the girls and have them bring food."
The parking area is packed as I weave around to our reserved spot and back the trailer in.
“We’re in luck, they’ll bring Chinese.” Em loves Chinese.
This is a good rodeo for us can chasers, that’s what barrel racers are called, with high points to earn and a worthwhile payout. All four of us gals have an excellent chance to bring home cash — with the wet ground we really have a good chance. Plenty of horses don’t perform well in mud but our horses do. Still, the competition is always stiff but we’re not newcomers. We’ve been running together for more than ten years and function as a tight team — that lessens the work load.
I’m happy to have running partners but we’re more like sisters, and we fight like sisters. Our work skills fall around the same level and all of us have a strong need to win.
Suzanne handles business and scheduling. Beverly keeps horse feed and supplements stocked.
Emily is the peacemaker. She keeps us out of trouble — or tries to — we all lean to the hot head side. Not Em, she's a true diplomat.
My job is keeping the horses ready for competition making sure their attitude is right and they’re healthy. If they get out of sorts, I fix them. Training horses is my other job.
There’s only one problem. All three of these women are too good looking and ooze sex appeal like sweat. They’re a fishing lure for men without trying. We’re not heavy drinker
s and don’t party but don’t mind spending a little time with a good looking guy.
All except me. I’m average in appearance, not into the fancy glitter. I like staying to myself and avoid the men. Suzz is another story. She gets lost in a new guy every event. Bev and Em are selective when it comes to guys. Mainly, we’re here to run and win, it’s how we make our living.
"Hey! Come check this out! It’s the hot roper parking next to us. Why is he at this event?" Emily is amused.
"Good question. This isn't the best for team ropers, maybe he need points."
"You should meet him.”
I smirk at her. “Me and the leader of the playboys pack? Right! You meet him. I don’t have time.”
She laughs at me. They do love pushing my buttons every chance possible.
It’s Clay Standish. Oh yeah! He is the hottest man breathing on this planet. Good looks far past what’s normal. He’s in the top 3 of team ropers, tall with massive, hard muscle bulging to match the bad boy image pouring off him in large quantities. His deep gravel voice delivers a smooth line of bull like honey to a bear and the women do flock to him.
I haven’t seen him around since last year in Nevada. Yes, I remember the exact time and place I last saw him. I’m not sure why I bother to catalog that information since that man has zero clue I exist but I’m well aware of his magnetic pull. Can’t count the times I’ve pleasured myself with him in mind.
I try not to look over while he unloads his horses but that’s close to impossible. That butt in those tight Wranglers — Wow…is all I can say. Suzanne needs help parking across from us so I do it for her then unload her horses and get them into the barn.
He’s right there, close enough I can smell him, it’s a woodsy, clean scent. Another quick look or two shows the tee shirt stretched to max across his arms and chest. He’s much thicker with muscle than most ropers but what a hunk of man! This won’t be good. How did he get stalls in this barn? And a parking space next to me…it’s reserved spots only for the can runners.
“Ladies, thought I’d say hello since we’ll be room mates for the weekend. I’m Clay Standish.”
He tips his hat as Emily introduces everyone. He flashes a wide smile — those lips — those perfect kissable lips! He makes eye contact with each of us showing plenty of manners, then he turns back to me.
What the hell?
“Your name seems familiar. Mind if I ask your last name?”
“Ryan, Jessie Ryan out of Chama, New Mexico.”
“That tells me why I feel like I already know you.”
“How’s that?” I asked.
“Last year I bought a horse from Max Baxter when he retired, you were the trainer. He’s a top notch roping horse, sure makes my job easy.”
“Glad to know he’s treating you right. That gelding was one I thought about keeping, I liked him that much, but Max out talked me.”
I stay with my work not making direct eye contact with him again. I don’t want him to see my flushed face. His husky voice booms out sending sparks of electricity through me.
Damn it to hell! Distractions are not what I need.
“Is she always this friendly?” a smirk in his tone.
“That was friendly.” Em chuckles. “Jessie’s all about work.”
“Well, just wanted to say hello. Have a good night.”
We all glance around to each other with a question mark on our faces.
I don’t have to wonder which of the girls will show interest in the hot one. I can’t lie, his presences puts a buzz in me. Last year I felt something about him, and at other rodeos before that, when I’d see him. That was my cue to keep a wide space between us, which I did, but he hasn’t left my mind since then and I always watch for him.
That man would be trouble of the painful kind. He has quite the bad reputation too. Midway through the Chinese, it comes up.
“So, is anyone thinking about checking out the neighbor?” Suzz asked as she glanced around the group.
“Keep my name out of the hat.”
“What about you, Em? Bev?”
“Who he goes after is what tells the story. He’s one of those macho guys who gets the one he wants.”
“I’m with Em,” Bev adds. “But listen, if you’re interested, go for it. None of us mind.”
“I might chat him up.” She has that look in her eye.
Here we go! I’ll be doing all her work.
Trust me, sparks flew when his eyes met mine, at least for me. My heat soared straight up and back down to wet my panties.
Clay Standish can show you lustful dirty things, nasty things with sweet emotions, in a single look. I swear I heard his eyes tell me ‘I need to fuck you now’.
Yep, that’s what his eyes said to me and the danger signs flashed. He has too much charm. I knew last year I’d have this reaction if we met.
But I don’t have to worry. He’ll lock onto Suzz, she’s a sexy blond knock out. I’m a ranch woman and plain by comparison. Does that bother me? Nope, I don’t want to be fake like her, but I have to say I’d love to know what it feels like in his arms.
With the mud showered off, I’m a new person. The rain finally stopped leaving the sky with a lightning show of unusual patterns. I throw on gray sweats, make my usual pot of decaf on the fire pit and go to the barn for a final horse check.
Footsteps behind me are heavy, a man’s step, my hand eases into my jacket pocket taking hold of the handle to slide the safety off, then I turn to see who’s in the barn this late.
“I stole a cup of your coffee,” Clay says in his best fuck me voice sporting a friendly smile.
I reset the safety. I’d like to kiss and lick every inch of his skin, no words needed, just eat him alive but I won’t.
“There’s plenty.” My eyes stay a little too long at his chest and arms then down lower. Hope he didn’t notice.
Of course, he noticed… that’s why he’s smirking like he’s the only man with a cock, and he just caught me looking at it. I hate giving him the satisfaction of knowing I like the way he looks, same as all the other women. He walks with me as I check horses.
“I bet you do this every night, no matter where you are.”
He’s making me wet without much trouble. I’ve never felt this way before just from being near a guy. I’m blushing and breathing shallow for no reason.
“They work hard and deserve lots of care. Plus they relax me.”
“Has to be why you train so well. I always believed a female couldn’t train horses but you proved me wrong.”
Why is he giving me compliments? He’s good with horses. I’ve seen him fix a blow up fast and the right way.
“I do my best for what the individual horse needs.”
He’s quiet as I run my hand down a leg on Bev’s horse checking for swelling.
“I haven’t seen you at a rodeo since Reno last year… did you take time off?” he asked in a more sincere tone.
That stuns me. How would he notice? Events are busy and takes a conscious effort to look for someone. I’m not at all his type so why notice if I’m not there?
“Nope, no time off. I ran last season in the Dakotas, the season before on the West coast. I’d like time off but...What have you been up to?”
I’m jittery next to him and I don’t like that one bit. He’ll pick up on it, though I could swear he seems nervous as well. He’s not the nervous type and neither am I.
“Trying to cover too many rodeos, working hard the same as you.” His eyes on me are intense, he turns away dropping his head for a moment before looking back at me. “I’ve kept an eye out for you since I saw you in Nevada last year. I found out who you were by searching the Vegas finals videos. I’ve wanted to meet you.”
That truly steps me back. I’m shocked, not believing it. That doesn’t fit. His women are full of flash and fake.
“That seems like a lot of work to —”
I’m cut off when two young, mostly naked, can runners beat a path up to him, th
row their arms around him. One jumps up locking her legs around his waist, kissing his mouth and face.
“We’ve been looking every where for you, Clay! You’re missing the best party.”
I don’t recall if he said anything to them. I’m almost out the barn door.
“Jessie… Wait!”
I don’t look back. He’s grabbing my arm turning me around.
“It isn’t what it looks like.”
“Is that so…”
Out of nowhere Suzz is next to us. Clay drops his hand and walks away.
“You stole coffee, I see.”
“So did he before he followed you. He watched you from the common area and ran over when you left for the barn. What did he have to say?”
“Small talk about nothing.” Her reaction isn’t much. “You heard the party chicks arrive?”
“I heard them. But he followed you to the barn. I think he’s got his eyes on you.”
“Not likely. Anyway, he’s a straight out pussy hound.”
“If the rumors are true, he is. Yeah, I lost my interest after hearing those teenagers carrying on with him. What did he do?”
