Prologue
"How would you like to go home Jake? The staff and I see you've made outstanding progress—enough to let you continue with out-patient services." The doctor waits for a few moments to see Jake's reaction.
"I've been ready. Outpatient will work." Jake sounds upbeat with a beaming grin across his face. If he feels concerned, it doesn't show.
Sandy steps into the door just in time to catch the last of the conversation. Sheer terror engulfs her face and her mouth falls slightly open.
"Doctor, are you sure? I don't think he's ready to go home. He needs more direct care here at the hospital. I have to hire a full-time caretaker and therapist. It takes time to get everything in place at home. I also must bring help into the office so I can be with Jake at least a few days a week. I need more time to plan."
Jake watches me. He gives the smallest cue meaning 'Get in the game'.
"Doctor, I'm able, and happy, to take Jake to my home. There's housing for a live-in physical therapist and nursing assistant, also a private guest house for his family. A full-time cook already lives at the ranch, and I have no outside responsibilities to take me away. I'd be there around the clock. Would you consider this as a recovery plan?"
Jake's parents gaze at me then look at Jake. There's a question mark on her face and a firm look of approval on his face. If I get this to happen without a problem in his family, it'll certainly be a big accomplishment.
"It doesn't sound workable to me, that's too far from Denver. I'm not... I don't think it will work," Sandy stammers then questions her mother. "Don't you want Jake to be at our house?"
The doctor and discharge planners listen to Sandy's protest as they pay close attention to everyone's reactions. He asked the opinion of the team with each one accepting my proposal as the best rehab plan for Jake. The doctor agreed.
"It sounds like Miss Dorrance has the facilities and is available to meet Jake's needs," he says, then asked Jake "What do you think of the idea?"
"Race and I discussed it. We want to take the burden off my parents." Jake looks over at me and smiles, then looks at his mother with the sweetest eyes and blows her a kiss.
"Jake, it's too far away from home—you can't go with her." Sandy's discontent is upfront, she sees it the wrong way. To her it's a personal rejection which isn't what it's about.
The doctor is quick to put Sandy in line. "The option Miss Dorrance has given is viable and will work to Jake's, and his parents, best advantage. My patient comes first in this situation."
Mr. Lancer steps up and speaks to the doctor.
"We'll settle Jake in with Race to recover."
"Dad, no! it's..."
"Sandy, it's decided."
The senior discharge planner wastes no time in taking me aside to set up an appointment to work out details of Jakes discharge.
Mr. Lancer puts his hand on my shoulder.
"You're a good woman Race, glad Jake chose you."
"Thank you, sir."
A gentle hug is what I give to his mother and tell her to not worry.
"You'll enjoy being with Jake at the ranch. Truly, you will."
Jake holds his hand out to his father for a celebration shake followed by a hug with his Mother.
"Sandy?" Jakes calls. She had left the room in a huff.
"She stepped out to take a business call. Maybe you could give me her hug and I'll keep it for her?"
Everyone laughed, and that was my goal.
"Come here cowgirl."
As we hug, I whisper to Jake...
"You know I'm yours."
"Remember that baby."
Chapter 1
Race Dorrance
The excitement of Jake’s discharge has us at a high pitch of emotion. His parents are over the top enough to have a pleased expression, something I haven’t seen before. It’s understandable with what they’ve watched their only son endure.
I’m thrilled, nervous, worried and happy, all in the same minute. The fear comes from the unknowns, will he make a full recovery? No one knows yet.
It’s impossible to not notice each time the same fear makes an appearance in his mind. His brow nits together as his lips become a tight thin line. He’s quick to push it away but I see it cross over him several times a day. My logical brain tells me it’s normal for him to experience fears after a near death event.
It’s a given for me to have worries for his outcome. Knowing the scientific information about his brain injury doesn’t make it easier to deal with. He’s the man I love.
There’s nothing I want more than to see Jake back to his old self, not only for me, but for him. My gut feeling says when his days are back to his usual routine we’ll see fast improvement. He isn’t a man who wants to lay around doing nothing. He needs a mission.
Right now, he needs personal direction in his recovery from someone who cares for him. That’s me. I’m not saying his parents don’t care, they do. But they’re up in years and lack the stamina to handle the daily physical care he needs. There’s the emotional side of it, too. Mrs. Lancer worries constantly which weighs heavy on him. He becomes highly stressed about her health.
My hope is the upbeat vibes of the Racing D will help his recover. The crew of cowboys will treat him healthy before he actually is, and I believe that’s important.
"If my thinking is right the doctor won’t allow you to fly home based on the head trauma. The cabin pressure could cause problems so I've come up with an idea. Tell me what you think." I look up from my notepad at him.
"I trust what you decide on."
"I know you do. I’d still like to tell you." I lean over putting my cheek to his for a moment. "What about this. I’m hiring an RV. It’ll be a smooth ride with room for you to sit in a chair or lay down in the bedroom. There’s a bathroom plus a kitchen. I’m planning to ask Milt to come drive us since he’s a top hand behind the wheel. I think it's the most comfortable, safest thing we can do honey."
"You think of everything, don’t you. What I’m sure of is this, I’m ready to get out of here. I want out of this bed and back on my feet, whatever it takes."
"You have the right attitude to make it happen." To hear him this positive is a great thing.
"We’re aiming for a full recovery. You can believe I'll do everything I can to make it happen. Mostly because I'm selfish and want to ravish your body for hours every day."
I can't help laughing when his eyes pop open with surprise. He takes my hand squeezing it.
"That very thing has been on my mind for a while. I’m going crazy waiting to get my hands on you pretty girl."
"I'm in the same thought, the sooner the better. It’s just how good you feel to me cowboy."
The discharge planner is on time for our appointment and she quickly confirmed my suspicion. Flying is not an option. I lay out my plan for the RV which she approves before I’m finished with the details.
"Now I can call the ranch and start these plans. What do you think?" Jake is still in agreement on our home arrangements at my ranch for recovery and seems quite happy about it. I'm watching his body language closely for any negative signs. At the same time, I feel he’d tell me if he has concerns, just in case, I'll fish a little.
"Are you chomping at the bit?" I asked him.
"Probably too much. I want to stay calm, but I can't wait to go through the exit doors. It’ll be outrageous to be with you every day. I have plans, big plans for us." He puts that fetching wide grin on his face.
"What the hell would've happened to me if I hadn’t found you in that parking lot. I’d be a lonely, gr
umpy old man. I’m not happy without you, Race."
"You’re stealing my words. When I think about it, that’s exactly how I feel about you. I need you close enough to touch."
"I’ve learned a hard lesson through all this and that is, life is full of nasty surprises. I want us to make every day count baby. Every day we have together is pure gold to me."
In his tone is a tinge of sadness. I feel it, along with those instant stabs of fear.
"You have my full back up. We’ll make every day full of wonder." I wink at him.
"When I’m with you my days are wondrous," he’s fast to say.
"Tell me, how can you make me feel this loved with a few simple words?" My coy glance makes him grin like he won the lottery.
"Should we make these phone calls before the guys get away from the barn?" as I get my phone out. He nods yes.
"Hey Bob, I have good news, company is coming. Jake, and his family, will be with us. You can bet we’re ecstatic! Now that you ask, I could use help driving us back to Colorado. We’re not allowed to fly so I’m renting an RV. Can you spare Milt? That is great. Thank you, Bob. I'll call you after we get things confirmed. Can’t wait to see you."
"I hear the closeness between you two. I'm glad you have him."
"Believe me, the man is one in a million. I couldn’t have made it without him or the other guys. Now look at me, I have another wonderful man in my life, I’m talking about you." He shows me the inviting curls at the corners of his lips.
"I hope your family accepts me."
"They will, mostly they’ll feel sorry for you since they view me as the barn brat."
"Never could I see you in that light."
"As you heard, Milt is coming today. I have it worked out for your parents to fly back when he gets dropped off. It’ll be in two or three hours. Will they be okay with going in the chopper from Denver to the ranch?"
"I think so. I’ll call Dad."
Our drive to Colorado will be about 20 plus hours if all goes well. I’m expecting Jake to have a rough ride based on the vertigo.
I'm glad to see the doctor come in alone for a change.
"Hey Doc, thanks for coming in. There are a few questions I want to ask before leaving. Race, do you mind giving us a minute?"
"Not at all." I have an idea what the talk will cover.
"I need to understand what my limits are when it comes to sex, how physical can I be and what should I avoid."
"Good questions. The first week you should take it physically easy, having a climax is not a problem, do try to stay as physically quiet with it as you can. Staying on your back works best to prevent side effects of headache or nausea. The more you move, the more side effects. By the second week I think you'll sees more improvement. You’ll get a feel for how much you can increase the physical part."
"I'm sure I can manage it. My lady is aware of my limitations. I doubt she’ll let me get too far out of hand."
"The two of you are a good team. You’ll most likely be carsick on the drive. I’ll give you medication to take with you."
"How did it go with the doctor?" I asked.
"He said everything I wanted to hear. My only restriction with making love to you is to take it easy the first week, not too much physical movement and stay on my back if possible. He thinks the second week I'll be improved which means less restrictions. Though truthfully, it wouldn’t matter what he said. I have to feel you. That’s the bottom line."
"I’m not about to stop you." I chuckle at him. "My idea is to take it easy and I have a plan you might like. Well, you liked it before so you might again. All you need to do is lay back, relax, let me straddle you. I can do what I love, which would be to make you feel wonderful, also I get to be on cloud nine. You think it would work?"
"Don't talk foolish, you know it would. I won’t forget the night I stared up at you when you were straddle me. Your silhouette in the night light was something unexplainable. Trust me, I remember the curve of your body, your perfect hips. Baby what I want is to always be close like we were that night."
"I’m sure we can work it out. Of course, I need to do a few trial runs since I’m a little rusty."
"You are such a tease in the worst way girl. When we get home, I’m gonna make you come apart."
Jake is remarkably upbeat with a bright glow in his face. We’re both past ready to get out of this place, then he’ll thrive. Sex isn’t everything all the time, however, sometimes sex is quite important to life. Right now, making love is everything to him on many levels. He’s concerned about his manhood, which I understand, but I have an intuitive feeling it won’t be an issue at all.
"I think you’ll find the ranch surprisingly comfortable, babe. My job is to make sure you do. Anything special you might like?"
The awareness in his eyes gives me peace. After watching him struggle with pain these past weeks, I need to see him have a few rays of sunshine and his discharge is lifting him up.
This man went through hell. If it’s wore me down, it’s certainly took more out of him. Jake’s a tough guy, not a complainer, which makes it harder to know how he really feels.
"There is one thing I’d like, a room close to yours. I know we won’t be able to share a room at your home. I need to keep things respectable for you and your family. At the same time, I don’t want to be far from you. I missed you, Race. After you got here I knew things would be okay, but I still want to be close to you. Even with me telling you I’m not sure you get the full impact of how I feel about you, how much I need you near me."
"I’ve already taken steps to make sure I’m close by all the time. Your bedroom is attached to mine with a connecting door. And when you feel up to it, I’m taking you to the barn with me. A comfortable daybed and reclining chair are set up in the viewing area in case you want to stretch out for a quick rest. Racing season is coming up fast and we must get these horses up to top condition. That means I’ll be at the barn most of the day. Also, I have several rooms ready for you in the main house which will give you a full view of the barn, the arena, and part of the track."
His arm goes around my shoulder with a strong grip as he’s laughing in his mysterious deep voice. He’s still as charming as ever.
"You are something special girlie."
"You must have forgotten how much I like having you close to me."
As we’re talking Sandy comes in the room in quite a huff, hands on her hips, stomping as best she can in her high heels. It’s easy to see she wants trouble. I’ve been waiting for this knowing she’d do it. I’m fine with it, though I’m not interested in it happening in front of Jake. Still, if she fucks with me…
"Well, you bullied your way through the scenario with the doctor but don't think you’ve won. You won’t take my brother away from me and our parents and I'm here to make sure you don’t."
Without a preplanned thought I’m next to her gripping her arm firmly as I guide her into the bathroom.
Okay. So I shoved her into the damn bathroom.
She’s lucky that’s all I did. What I want to do is plant my boot square in her nasty mouth.
Jake calls out but I missed what he said.
"I’ll grind you to dust in a heartbeat, Sandy."
She backs up against the door as I push her with my body. Her face is full of shock, eyes big, staring at me in horror. Guess she’s never been put in her place before.
"You best think hard before you take me on, cupcake," my anger spewing out in a low growl.
"Are you saying you’d do physical harm to me?"
"I will render you fucking helpless if you pull a stunt like that again. Get the picture?"
